About Us

Before becoming a general contractor, Bonny began her building career with classes in Construction Technology at Santa Monica College in 1979. She moved to the Bay Area in 1980 where she began working as an apprentice union carpenter in downtown San Francisco.

Looking for more variety in her training, she began restoring old Victorians for a woman general contractor. Over the next several years, Bonny worked on a number of projects for different contractors learning the trade.

In order to be given the opportunity to do more complicated and challenging work, she found it necessary to change companies. As she puts it, “If I couldn’t be fired for doing it wrong, I didn’t want the job.”

With a focus on high-end custom residential remodeling projects, she began to excel in the execution of fine finish work and the use of traditional Japanese hand tools and traditional building techniques. She joined an exclusive group of local carpenters who enjoyed sharing the techniques of their art and working together to resolve craft issues.

In 1990 Bonny became a licensed general contractor and started a business in Davis, CA.  Retuning to the Bay Area in 1992, she built a second story addition for Innes McDonnell Construction in Oakland.

In 1992 and 1993 she remodeled a home in Orinda for Canyon Construction that included a 56’ skylight.  This project was featured in the Feb 1998 issue of Diablo Magazine  and in the book, “Adding to a House” by Philip Wenz.

In 1993 Bonny began remodeling homes for McCutcheon Construction Inc. of Berkeley. One of those projects included the extensive reworking of a Berkeley home involving major excavation and state-of-the-art seismic upgrades. This project subsequently won a Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association award.

In 2001 and 2002, Bonny managed a second multi-million dollar remodel in Oakland with extensive structural work that included a commercial grade music studio. Both these projects involved a thousand on-the-spot decisions, and included many design innovations and modifications, which allowed for expression of Bonny’s expanding skills in design.

In early 2004 she created her own company – Bonny Weil General Contractor.

At the end of those days that never end, beyond the human issues, beyond the code issues, beyond the weather issues, Bonny Weil brings to each job a love of excellence and an uncommon commitment to her craft. And it is in practicing her craft daily that over time, Bonny has become a master of it.
